Developing Entrepreneurial habits requires practice and intentional habit formation. Fortunately, there are ways that could assist you in developing habits. James Clear, author of the book Atomic Habits provides guidance on how these habits can be created.
A good way to start the process is declaring your intentions aloud through a process called implantation intention. This helps your brain to recognise what you want to achieve and it creates priority in your thoughts to take action around this.
Your practices are very closely linked to who you believe you are. For instance, if you believe you are a writer you are more likely to write, if you believe you are a hiker you are more likely to go on hikes, also as you take action and repeat certain practices you become that which you do. This is as much true to jogging as it is to entrepreneurship. The practices that you do develop your mindset and conversely the mindset that you have will lead to more entrepreneurial practices.
Habit stacking is a method of using old habits to form new habits. Your old habits are already ingrained in your mind and the neurons that form these habits are quite strong. This creates a good foundation to provide your brain with a que to form a new habit. In essence, you are pairing a new habit with an old habit.
Habit stacking is also a form of implementation intention so it is wise to express how you will be doing the new habit. The process would look like this: After/before (old habit), I will (new habit). An example of this might be: After I (switch on my laptop), I will (write down my to-do list).
These small habits can start accumulating over time to become very powerful.
You already have a list of habits that you do every day. Creating a habit inventory or a list of the habits that you already do can help you to find the best fit with a new habit.
- Switch of Alarm
- Stretch when I get up
- Eat Breakfast
- Brush Teeth
As you go through your day you can start thinking about all the various habits that make up your day. Each of the above habits provides an opportunity for you to build a new habit.
What entrepreneurial habits are there that you would like to form that would give you the results you are looking for? For instance, maybe you want to start the day by reflecting about your day, what you want to achieve and what the intentions are that you have. Habit formation can become a powerful tool when you align it to the formation of an entrepreneurial mindset. What habits can you think of that will serve your entrepreneurial journey?
